January Reflection

Jonathan Sherwin

As the first post after a few months of absence I’m going to look back on a great start to the year. But first let me back up a bit.

Last July I started work with Christian Vision for Men in England, moving back from the US where I was previously working with YWAM. I came on board working closely with Carl and was immediately thrust into the world of UK evangelism and training, clocking up thousands of miles on the roads (which I’ve actually acquired a taste for – beats plane travel for ease and minimal fuss). I’ve visited dozens of churches, been involved in several regional days and one national conference.

I also put my hand to the website, creating a blog, worked on some videos, set up some online booking/purchasing stuff, and made copious cups of tea.

In the middle of all that I moved from Bath to Derbyshire as the offices relocated to the middle of the country.

There’s been scheming and dreaming, long hours and big tasks. I’ve been thrust into an environment where dreams can be realised quickly but with that comes the responsibility of following through with the idea and delivering. CVM at it’s core is small and robust, always aiming to punch above it’s weight. Many people would be surprised to see how much we accomplish with the size of team that we have. It’s a truly exciting environment, one where there is always a strong sense of purpose, direction and provision from God.

Which leads me to some of the events of January. On Friday 22nd Jan we sent out an appeal letter as we were facing the very real prospect of going under as an organisation. Thanks to the new email system we just integrated (gotta love the Chimp) I was able to track opens, clicks etc. Within minutes donations started coming in, and in, and in … An email sent out at 4 in the afternoon on a Friday generated such a strong response that we were soon heading out of the woods.

The money spoke of the dedication of the band of brothers that stretches across the UK with the same heartbeat to see men saved. But more than this it was the messages of support that caused me to catch my breath. Blokes (and lasses) were standing by us, not letting us go down. It really was very humbling. I joined CVM because I felt that they were a group of real people with a clear and purposeful calling. Apparently, hundreds of people across the UK think so too.

The lessons that I learnt in YWAM were being reinforced in CVM. Where God guides, He provides. Whether that’s $1000 for a plane ticket to a foreign mission field or £20,000 to keep a home-grown mission agency going.

The next thing to unfold was an article published on the Times Online blog by Ruth Gledhill. Picking up on an older CVM survey the article outlined some of the aims of CVM also highlighting the urgency that we face as a national church. Ruth Gledhill’s blog being well-followed as it is, was soon picked up spawning many other blog pieces, some friendly and some otherwise. Before my eyes suddenly many people who wouldn’t be talking about CVM and talking, commenting, blogging …

It was a fascinating scene to observe. My feeling is that this is the beginning of something.

That feeling is more than just some thoughts on the blog world but part of a bigger belief that this year God will use CVM is some pretty huge ways. Codelife is on the horizon as are many, many other exciting projects. Who can know where we will be in 12 months?

I’ll endeavour to keep my thoughts coming now … Stay posted!

New Blog From CVM

Jonathan Sherwin

As mentioned last week I have been working on a new blog for Christian Vision for Men (CVM). Well, today we’ve taken it live!

Come take a look and read about some of the stuff we get up to working with CVM around the country. To get things started, Carl writes on evangelism geared up for men.

New Job: Christian Vision for Men

Jonathan Sherwin

Earlier this year I left YWAM in Maui to head back to England to work with Christian Vision for Men. Well, The 1st of July sees me start in my new role as Aide to the CEO – one affable fellow by the name of Carl Beech.

Who are CVM you might ask? Well, CVM are a bunch of people working together under a simple vision statement:

“Equip the church to introduce every man in the UK to Jesus Christ.”

Pretty simple really, eh?! There’s a fight on our hands in the UK – only 700,000 men attend church in this country. These guys have been fighting for a while and now I’m jumping in the trenches with them.

It’s all pretty exciting really. As a national ministry there’ll be plenty of travel, meeting lots of new people and seeing some old faces. I very much look forward to it all!

Wayne Grudem at WEST

Jonathan Sherwin

This week I shall be hopping on the train from Tuesday to Friday to head to Bridgend, to the Wales Evangelical School of Theology (WEST). WEST are in the middle of their Summer Season and this week I have the immense privilege of sitting in on Dr. Wayne Grudem’s ‘Doctrine of Scripture’ week. This is what WEST has to say on the week:

Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology is a core text in numerous seminaries around the world. This week presents a rare opportunity to hear the much esteemed Professor of Bible and Research at Phoenix Seminary reassert and defend the absolute integrity of the Bible in the light of current threats and misunderstandings.

I believe that this week is going to be really useful to me. In my time with the YWAM in Maui, I learnt much on the need to rigorously defend the integrity of the Bible. More than this, we need to be postively asserting the truth of God’s word. We cannot keep quiet on this matter for their are many voices shouting their anti-truth objections, from within as well as outside of the church.

It is also perhaps an interesting week that leads me up to next Sunday when I have a sermon entitled, ‘The Church as an Army.” Armies are trained to fight, and to fight objectively. What will the church in the UK fight for? Will perhaps part of it’s objectives be the defense of the inerrancy, infalliabilty, and ultimate authority of the Bible. Do we realise that if we lose Scripture, we lose Jesus and are left leaderless, hopeless and utterly lost?

I look forward to learning much from Dr. Grudem and posting some of what I have learned here.

Buying Christian Books in Great Britain?

Jonathan Sherwin

At a recent church service in Bath with Dr. J. I. Packer I came across a book distributor that caught my eye. 10 of Those.com is a Christian resources service that provide a good number of books at some pretty substantial savings.

For example, the ESV Study Bible (hardback) is currently £26.97 – that’s cheaper than Amazon. And when you start to increase the order size, say by 10 or more, the savings really do add up as bulk discounts apply, somethin which would be great for small groups etc.

You can order from their website or catch them at various events around the country.

Jonathan Sherwin – Web Designer

Jonathan Sherwin

My father’s web company began over 10 years ago. During those 10 years I have gained a fair bit of experience working for him; at times in a full-time role, and also part-time to support my work with YWAM. This April I returned to my native land and have taken the bold step to start my own business. Sound tricky? It wasn’t really. I simply registered as self employed, called the tax office, filled a form in online et voila!

There’s much talk about ‘tent making’ skills, but the short of it is by working for myself I can make money (important), can carry on with my missional activities (also important) and keep flexible for some pretty exciting projects on the horizon (important and cool).

So there it is! Jonathan Sherwin is available for hire in the south west (Bath and surrounding area) for web projects small and large.

Dr. J. I. Packer Comes to Bath

Jonathan Sherwin

Dr. J. I. Packer

When stopping through my local Christian book store yesterday I came across a leaflet promoting a talk next week from Dr. J. I. Packer. Naturally, I was very excited. Now, Dr. Packer has been made known to me chiefly through so many book endorsements. Along with this, he was also the general editor for the English Standard Bible (ESV), of which I am recently enjoying the study version. However, it was his book, Knowing God, that has impacted me the most and I am grateful for the wealth of insight that he has brought to me and to many people who have discipled me.

Dr. Packer will be speaking at St. Bart’s Church in Bath, at 7:30pm  on Thursday 21st May. For more information, see the Bath & Wells Diocesan Evangelical Fellowship website.

30 Years Ago Today

Jonathan Sherwin

30 years ago today Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Today she continues to polarise popular opinion and even if you were too young to remember much of her time in office (as I was) you more than likely still have some strong ideas about her.

For my part I see her as a courageous women who operated from convictions utterly alien to many politicians today. She put up a fight and won most of the time. She took our country by the reigns and proved that even a weak country with a strong leader can make a difference on the world stage. Britain, and the world, is the better for her. Her duty is an example to me, an inspiration, and a challenge.

For more on this may I recommend Boris Johnson’s thoughts.
